The iconic Table Mountain which dominates the multicultural city of Cape Town offers some of the most diverse and varied hiking in the world. If you are interested in a moderate stroll or an exciting scramble there are a multitude of hikes all within a 20 minute drive of the city.
Behind the famous and impressive cliffs the mountain chain extends for 75km all the way to The Cape of Good Hope and is home to numerous reservoirs as well as a wide variety of plants and animals.
One of the most famous hikes and more strenuous hikes on Table Mountain itself is the Skeleton Gorge trail. Starting in the botanical garden this trail takes you through thick indigenous forestry on the Eastern side of the mountain and then on to overlook the city below.
This trail takes you right away from the crowds and into the natural wilderness of the mountain.
Another very popular and far less strenuous trail is the Shipwreck trail at the Cape of Good Hope. Here the birdlife is quite incredible and you literally pass a number of ancient ship wrecks that floundered on the reefs found just off shore.
