We can say that balancing essential sightseeing of Slovenia with food-related activities will let you experience the local culture to the fullest and leave you hungry for more.
Let’s start at the roots. We will visit Ptuj, today known as the oldest town in Slovenia, with history dating back to the Roman times when it used to be a huge provincial city. Today, a quaint little town, boasting a beautiful castle that really makes its skyline, Ptuj is mainly known for two things - the carnival and wines. Visiting some of the most beautiful cellars in Slovenia with impressive history will offer an insight into the Slovenian wine culture. We will end the day in the countryside, staying the night at a tourist farm, a beautiful rustic accommodation with all the modern amenities and garden-to-table philosophy.
Maribor, the capital of Styria, is home to the oldest grapevine in the world, as certified by the Guinness Book of Records. The old lady is located in the center of the old town, where we will continue to discover secrets of Maribor’s history and wine culture, particularly in the old network of tunnels over 2 km long that hides below the city center. We will drive out to the vineyards surrounding the city to check out the Instagram-famous “heart road” and take in the fabulous views that the terraced vineyards have to offer.
The Holy Land of Slovenian wines, Jeruzalem is a spectacular setting, which moved even the crusaders who were passing through these lands. These rural areas seem almost untouched by time and local traditional knowledge is passed from generation to generation. You will be introduced to the pumpkin seed oil and its production and learn how this delicious brown substance made it all the way to the top restaurants in the world.
Meet Ljubljana, a cosy, relaxed capital that will charm you straight away! Spend your day exploring the city’s main sights and attractions on a walking food tour through the old town, all the while stopping for delicious tastes of rich Slovenian traditional cuisine. Enjoy a leisurely boat ride on Ljubljanica River, where you will be able to see why this is considered one of the greenest capitals in Europe. Try your own cooking skill as you tackle traditional Slovenian recipes by yourself under local guidance at a cooking class or just help out enough to feel very much accomplished when you are trying out the delicacies that came from under your own two hands.
El Slovenian Alps are something everyone raves about. We will head out early in the morning to the most famous attraction in Slovenia - El lago Bled and enjoy a morning boat ride to the picturesque island in the middle. The cafe on the island specialised in the most traditional Slovenian pastry - potica, which you will get to try and learn more about. The afternoon will be reserved for the gorgeous Lago Bohinj, famous for its cow cheese, and we will make sure you get to try some!
Another day, another must-see! We are off to Cueva de Postojna, the queen of caves, where a small electric train will take you underground for a unique experience. The dripstones and the halls of this cave are so spectacular that any description fails to do them justice. A short drive away from Postojna, we will pass by Castillo de Predjama as well, a unique structure with mysterious stories and a wonderful photo-stop. We will go further into the Karst region, which is famous for its stone-house villages, vineyards and a unique landscape, all the way to Þtanjel, a dreamy rustic town, where you will be able to try the typical local prosciutto and wine.
IMPORTANTE:
The temperature in the cave is 10C, so make sure you are dressed properly.
Get your taste buds ready, because we will be spoiling them with some exquisite wines on this day! The rolling hills of Goriška Brda covered in vineyards y medieval villages were made famous by winemakers that are praised all over the world. We will visit winemakers in both Goriška Brda and Valle de Vipava, taking a peak in their cellars and vineyards and enjoying the fruits of their labour.
Another day, another change of scenery! The small Slovenian coastline will offer you the Mediterranean vibes with its landscape, climate and architecture, as well as the laid-back feel to finish off your holiday in the right mood. We will spend time in Piran, the most popular town on the coast and enjoy it’s small medieval streets and picturesque buildings. Piran is surrounded by a wine growing region, so we will head up into the hills, where you will get to taste our Mediterranean style wines at a local farm and enjoy some of the best views of the Adriatic Sea. What a way to say goodbye to Slovenia!
