An unforgettable 6-day hut-to-hut hiking tour along a super scenic section of the famous Via Alpina. Every day is a new adventure as you tackle the undemanding trails across the Slovenian mountains with overnight stays at mountain huts, located in the pristinely stunning Triglav National Park.
The Via Alpina is a wonderful European collaborative Alpine project that’s been in operation since 2000. It consists of 5 international trails in 342 stages which run through 8 countries from Trieste to Monaco. For this amazing 6-day hiking tour we have carefully selected 4 easy stages of the Via Alpina which will take you into the very heart of Slovenia’s Julian Alps. The trip is suitable for anyone who can walk for up to 5-6 hours per day with breaks.
The trail leads across the unbelievable scenic landscape of the Triglav National Park, where you will get to experience life in the mountains and encounter some incredible Alpine attractions. This type of journey is called hut-hut hiking, meaning you will be spending each night at a different mountain hut location in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings. Mountain huts are basic, so don’t expect luxurious accommodations. However, they are clean and have all the basic facilities a hiker needs after a long day of exploring. Hut menus consist mainly of local alpine dishes. You’ll definitely regain the calories you lost during your hike and try something new at the same time. Typical food served in most huts are soups with sauerkraut, potatoes, barley, sausages and pork. Authentic and hearty stuff. And remember to bring some cash along, as there are no credit cards in the mountains.
Cerkno is a lovely town in the foothills of the Primorska region (the most northern part of the Slovenian coastal area). Your guide will help you with any pre-hiking preparations and supply you with all the necessary information. After checking your equipment, you will be free to stroll around or swim in the pool.
From the hotel, we will follow the Cerknica brook towards Pasica Gorge, home to the legendary partisan WWII hospital Franja hidden in the forest. The trail will then lead us to picturesque Podnjivč and the tiny settlement of Poljane, followed by Velbnik and Porezen mountain. The ascent to Porezen runs across wide meadows. From there we descend into Petrovo Brdo, where your first mountain hut awaits.
We ascend to the Črna Prst summit, passing through the village of Bača pri Podbrdu and the Kobla ski resort. A bite to eat will be had at the Zorka Jelinčiča Lodge, followed by a hike along the gorgeous Rodica Ridge. Spectacular views are guaranteed. The path then leads on towards the Vogel ski resort. To reach the Merjasec Mountain Hut, we will descend down the ski piste.
The day begins with another ascent up the ski slope to the spot where we left the main route the previous day. We then follow the ridge across Vrata towards Komna. An idyllic, flat, undemanding section awaits till Komna and down to the valley of the Triglav Lakes and its mountain hut.
First, we will venture down the lower valley of the Triglav Lakes, from Dvojno Jezero, or ‘Double Lake’, to Črno Jezero, ‘Black Lake’ (Lopučniška Valley), followed by a descend into Bohinj Valley to the Savica Waterfall. It is a relatively steep descent, but nothing too challenging. From the foot of the mountain, an easy walk to the waterfall awaits, before making our way towards the settlement of Ukanec along the shoreline of Lake Bohinj.
The last day will be spent resting in or around the refreshing waters of Lake Bohinj. During your transfer back to Ljubljana, we will make a brief stop at Lake Bled for a well-deserved kremšnita cream cake at the medieval Bled Castle.
