Exploring Slovenia’s Alpine world on foot is an incredible adventure that allows you to immerse yourself in nature and experience the region’s landscape and its treasures up-close. This walking holiday will take you to places most visitors to Slovenia never get to see and unlock the secrets of the most picturesque land the country has to offer. From hidden glacial lakes to unforgettable views of majestic mountains, from mythical forests and pastures above peaceful valleys to ancient gorges and crystal-clear emerald rivers that carve their way through this awe-inspiring wilderness.
Your daily itinerary is comprised of 3-4 hours of hiking down undemanding, gradually ascending trails in the company of a professional local guide. We will transport you between locations with vans and your guide will have a different route planned for each day, making sure the walk is tailored to your needs. You will stop off at amazing locations, including traditional mountain huts, farms and alpine villages, where you’ll taste some fantastic authentic dishes and get a feel for the rustic lifestyle in the very heart of the Julian Alps. These trips also involve hitching cable car rides up rugged hillsides for the best panoramic views and learning about the rich history of the place. An all-round adventure awaits!
Get settled at Lake Bled, the most popular alpine resort in Slovenia, your home for the next four days. Start your walking adventure after a short drive to Bohinj area and a cable car ride to Vogel, a skiing area in the winter and a walker’s paradise the rest of the year. Surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas, the trails of Vogel are the easiest in the Slovenian Alps at such elevation. Enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Bohinj, an absolute pearl of Triglav National Park. To energise before your walking, we will treat you with a nice traditional lunch in a mountain hut.
Start your day at the crack of dawn and head up to a small hill in Bled, called Ojstrica, for a spectacular sunrise view of Lake Bled. After breakfast and maybe a quick nap for the sleepyheads, we will head out to discover Voje Valley. Our walk will start at Mostnica Gorge with trails and bridges that cross this stunning creation of nature. Halfway into the valley, we will stop at the Voje mountain hut for lunch (and some of the best pies ever!) to fuel up for the rest of the day. The Voje Valley opens up and crossing shepherding meadows and forests, we will reach another pearl, the Mostnica Waterfall. After our return to the starting point, we will head to Lake Bohinj for some free time, swimming or, for those most eager, some more walking along the lake’s shore. We will wrap up this exciting day with a real treat, a gourmet dinner at a local family-run restaurant.
An absolute favourite for anyone staying at Lake Bled, is a hike through Vintgar Gorge, located very near. Following Radovna River on boardwalks and trails, this refreshing and shady walk is a perfect start of our day. After Vintgar, we will drive through the less-known Radovna and Krma Valleys with their almost untouched traditional way of life to reach Vrata Valley, right in the heart of the Julian Alps. Vrata Valley is marked by the Triglavska Bistrica stream and a great walking trail all the way to the head of the valley, where you will be in awe of the great northern face of Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia. Our lunch break will include a stop at the Aljažev dom hut, a popular base for hikers and mountaineers that head up to the higher peaks. Our highlight of the afternoon will be the Peričnik Waterfall, one of the highest among Slovenian waterfalls, where you can literally walk behind it.
We will say goodbye to Bled and head over the Vršič Pass through the stunning Soča Valley. A journey to the heart of the Julian Alps with beautiful stops with magnificent views will be a wonderful prelude of what’s to follow in the days to come. Enjoy a traditional meal, or a fun barbecue in case you join another escorted small group. Enjoy some free time in the small town of Bovec in the afternoon, relax and get ready for the next few days.
We will head up to the river banks of the Soča and discover its lively course, exploring the amazing troughs the river has made and hike into Lepena Valley, another paradise corner of this part of Slovenia. The hike will take us to an almost secret grove, following natural pools and small waterfalls, all in the shade of a green, lush forest. Enjoy a delicious traditional lunch in a local village. The afternoon will be reserved for waterfalls around Bovec and free time to spend relaxing in the beautiful setting of this adventure capital of Slovenia.
We will drive further south, towards Kobarid, where we go on a hiking loop to Drežnica village, voted one of the most scenic villages in Slovenia, and walk through the beautiful surrounding nature. Amazing forests, mountains and gorges will keep you company all the way to the famous Kozjak Waterfall, which is an absolute must if you are in the area. Our delicious lunch will be in Kobarid, an experience in itself with traditional cuisine and delightful atmosphere. The area of Kobarid is also famous for its WWI history, which you will get to know more about after a visit to the world-famous Kobarid museum.
All good things must come to an end, so we will leave the stunning Soča Valley and head up towards the Predil Pass, which will briefly bring us through Italy, where we will stop by the tranquil Lake Predil. After a short drive, we will re-enter Slovenia in the very northwestern corner and enter a valley, called Tamar. Most of the valley is closed for traffic, which makes it a perfect hiking destination and the entry point is by Planica Nordic Center, the home of ski-flying. You will be able to see the enormous ski-jumping hills before the start of the hike. The trail to the head of the valley is surrounded by incredible views of the Julian Alps. The last stop of the day will be near Kranjska Gora, a popular alpine resort, by Lake Jasna where another delicious lunch awaits. After some well-deserved free time by the lake, your holiday will be concluded back in Ljubljana.
