The National Gallery of Slovenia is located in the centre of Ljubljana and is housed in a beautiful building from the late 19th century. The Gallery was founded in 1918, after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and has been at its present location since 1925. It’s a wonderfully interesting place, packed with historical art. Its collection of fine art is comprised of periods stretching from the High Middle Ages to the 20th century. The National Gallery’s permanent collection holds nearly 600 works by renowned Slovenian and European artists, including medieval sacred art, works by the Baroque artists Gregorio Lazzarini in Giulio Quaglio, Biedermeier portraits by Jožef Tominc, neoclassical paintings by Franc Kavčič, works by Realists Janez Šubic and Jurij Šubic, paintings by the popular Slovenian painter Ivana Kobilca, and masterpieces of Slovenian Impressionists Ivan Grohar, Rihard Jakopič, and Matija Jama. If you’re a fine arts enthusiast, the National Gallery should certainly be placed high on your list of Ljubljana attractions.
