The church became a photographic phenomenon in the early 90s when famous National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry took a shot there and published it in the magazine. After sunrise, we return to our accommodation, have breakfast, and drive towards Kranjska Gora, the Vršič Mountain pass, and the Soča Valley.
During the drive, we will enjoy a lot of photogenic views of the Julian Alps in Triglav National Park. Lunch in the Soča Valley is followed by an afternoon of photographing the amazing emerald Soča River.
After checking in the hotel in Bovec in the evening, we drive up to the Mangart mountain pass, where the highest road in Slovenia ends at nearly 2000 m above sea level. After sunset, we can practice night photography in the mountains and try to capture the milky way.
Overnight in Bovec
Rakov Škocjan
After a late breakfast in the morning, we follow the Soča River to the town of Kobarid and go on an easy 1.5-hour hike to the beautiful creek of the Kozjak Waterfall to capture this hidden photographic gem of the Slovenian Alps.
We proceed to the area of Goriška Brda, also known as Slovenian Tuscany, where we enjoy the views of the vineyards, farms, and medieval villages. Then we enjoy a sunset session on the viewpoint above the region, where we can enjoy a glass of the famous local wine. At last, a delicious dinner and overnight stay in Goriška Brda awaits.
Overnight stay in Bovec
We can choose to have an optional sunrise photography session, where we drive through the scenic area of Goriška Brda and look for more motifs. After breakfast, we leave towards the coast.
After transferring to Piran/Portorož and having lunch in a local restaurant, we spend the afternoon with some free time in the charming medieval town of Piran, where we explore its narrow streets, a bustling vegetable market and the hidden passages to some of the houses. At the end of the day, we have a sunset session on the Piran walls and blue hour photography in the harbor.

On day 6, we drive to the hinterland of the Slovenian coast. We capture the photogenic church of Hrastovlje and explore the nearby area. Things to know
Photo Holidays Slovenia are designed for anyone with an interest in photography. 8-day holiday workshops are designed to combine travel, relaxation and photography. We welcome beginners and professionals alike. You can join us with the newest DSLR and a huge bag of equipment or just a simple point-and-shoot camera. You can also bring someone, who is not a photographer along. There are plenty of different sightseeing and activity opportunities on the way.
Our team consists of pro-photographers in landscape, travel, wildlife and macro photography. Your holiday guide is Nejc Trpin, an award-winning professional landscape and adventure photographer. During his photography career he developed several skills and styles of photography. His photographs were published in various international and local magazines, including National Geographic and Landscape Photography Magazine. He is also a f-Stop Gear and Fujifilm Slovenia ambassador and educator. He often says his aim is to search for the light in adventure.
Most of the iconic spots that we will be visiting are next to or close to the main roads. Some spots are within reasonable walking/easy hiking distance, and other locations are reachable by car.
You will need a camera and a basic lens (optional). It is advised (but not essential) to have a DSLR camera with a wide angle and a tele-photo lens. You can also bring your mirrorless or point-and-shoot cameras. A tripod is warmly recommended as well. Apart from photo gear, it is recommended to have some basic outdoor clothing and sturdy hiking shoes.
We use different comfortable vehicles on our tours, from private cars to vans, depending on the group size. They all have A/C and enough space for our luggage and photography gear.
We will mostly spend our nights (until the early morning for the sunrise photo, of course) in the family-owned guest houses or tourist farms, and occasionally in 3- or 4-star hotels. All accommodations are carefully chosen from our previous holiday experiences and convenient for reaching the photography locations in the area. Prices are based on a shared double/twin bedroom basis. We can assist you in finding a roommate. Single use is available on request.
Our team of pro-photographers in landscape, travel, wildlife and macro photography will help you with understanding the basics of using your camera, help you use and practice the techniques that are often used in travel and landscape photography and advise you on choosing the best lenses for different purposes. We will also look into the basic post-processing in simple image editors and give you some tips and tricks about post-production in Photoshop and Lightroom. At the end, we will have an evaluation session to choose your best photographs.
We will do our best to adjust the tour schedule to the weather forecast. But on the other hand, bad weather is a good opportunity to make some stunning and dramatic photographs, or we can seize that time for a detailed workshop of image postprocessing.
