When the snow melts and the temperature gets into the high twenties, summer is on, and Slovenia is one of the best countries where to spend it.

Adventures in the Soča Valley

The Soča Valley is one of the best places to experience Slovenia: the turquoise waters of the Soča River (also known as the Isonzo) make a magnificent backdrop for adventure holidays that include rafting, canyoning, and kayaking. In addition, there are countless hiking and biking trails that traverse through the valley’s mountainsides, which are covered in snow during winter, making summer the right time to visit Soča.

And we shouldn’t forget about another popular water-based activity everyone loves — fishing. Soča River should be the choice for your next fly fishing trip.

Kayaking
Kayaking

After you had your days full of adrenaline and fun, take a hike to some of the water wonders in the vicinity of the alpine town of Bovec. Hike to the magical Kozjak waterfall, hiding in a heavenly corner where it falls 15 meters into a green pool surrounded by dark walls. And if you walk a little further, you can explore the magnificent Tolmin Gorge on a circular path that leads you past waterfalls and pools, each one more picturesque than the next one.

Visit Lake Bled

If you only visit one place in Slovenia (and we’re not sure why you would want to), make it Lake Bled. Bled is a gorgeous town in the northwest part of the country, easily one of the prettiest places in Europe. The town sits surrounded by some stunning mountains and beside a beautiful lake with a charming island in the middle.

Holidays at Lake Bled are also a great chance for a hiking trip in the Julian Alps or walking around the more lowland but equally exciting Vintgar Gorge. You can also visit the Bled Castle, take a traditional boat ride to the church island, or cycle around the lake. And if you get sick of all that activity, there are plenty of relaxing spots just to sit by and enjoy the view.

Bled is easily reached by bus from Ljubljana — but don’t expect to be able to sleep on the way there since this drive offers amazing views!

Lake Bled

Bike & Hike in the Alps

Slovenia’s mountains offer a range of hiking trails for all levels of experience. Covered in snow during winter, the Julian Alps are among the most striking sights in Slovenia, offering breathtaking views as well as challenging paths even in the summer. Going on a holiday in the Triglav National Park, the home to some of the country’s most majestic scenery, is perfect for those seeking more leisurely routes.

If you would like to combine your biking with a nature walk, then head to the Zelenci Natural Reserve. This beautiful reserve offers peaceful walks and bike rides along its network of paths. Alternatively, you could cycle from Kranjska Gora through picturesque villages and local farms en route to Tamar Valley, or make your way towards Lake Jasna and chill beside the peaceful lake.

Karavanke mountains

Sunbathe on the coastline

Though it may not have a long coastline, Slovenia still has plenty to offer beach lovers. The Slovenian coast is just 46km long and lies on the northern Adriatic Sea, which is well known for its warm waters and cleanliness. Locals often refer to the area as ‘The Slovenian Riviera’ due to its charm, beauty, and accessibility from Ljubljana. All this makes it an excellent spot for family holidays by the sea.

Piran may be smaller than neighboring Portorož, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in beauty: you’ll find yourself falling under the spell of its medieval streetsVenetian churches, and Baroque palaces. If you tire of relaxing on the beach or exploring the old town (which is unlikely), there is an exciting water park just a short drive away from Piran where you can splash around all day long or watch your children do so from one of the many cafés under the palm trees!

Portorož is a seaside resort that attracts many visitors each year. Relax on the beach, rent a deck chair, or have lunch at one of the restaurants or cafes near the sea. You can also explore the history of the nearby Sečovlje Salt Pans, a protected wetland area that has been cultivating the art of traditional salt-making for more than 700 years.

Foodie city break in Ljubljana

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a paradise for culinary lovers and perfect for a foodie city break. The city’s reputation as a culinary leader has been growing in recent years, and it’s now home to countless restaurants, cafes and bars serving delicious food from all corners of the globe. Whether you fancy local Slovenian dishes or want to sample some international cuisine on your trip, you’ll find plenty of options here.

What makes Ljubljana particularly attractive for foodies is its size. Unlike many capital cities, which are sprawling metropolises where you need to travel long distances between neighborhoods just to see the sights and try out different restaurants, Ljubljana is compact — so compact that it’s easily walkable from one end of the city to another! You can even visit the castle (and enjoy an incredible view of Ljubljana) without needing to take public transport.

Deemed the European Green Capital in 2016, Ljubljana has many parks located in different parts of the city. On the hot summer days, you are welcome to visit one of them and take a walk in the shade of the trees while listening to the birds singing.

Explore the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

The Postojna Cave is the most visited cave in Europe. It simply needs to be on your list if you want to see the best of Slovenia on your holiday here. It is a vast underground world with stalactites, stalagmites, and peculiar rock formations that amaze young and old alike. While there, you can see the Proteus – an olm salamander that lives for more than 100 years.

Another advantage of visiting the cave is the cold air inside. The temperature always stays between 8 °C and 10 °C, making it a perfect place to cool off from the outside heat.

Postojna Cave

Not far away is the Predjama Castle, the largest cave castle in the world. This ancient fortress was built into a 123-meter high cliff and has secret underground tunnels where Erasem of Predjama was once hiding from the Imperial invaders.

Visit Slovenia in the summer

Summer holidays in Slovenia are full of sunshine, water, mountains, and activity. Whatever you need, we got it. But it’s not only in summer that Slovenia is full of life and ready to offer any traveler an unforgettable experience. Every season has its unique charms and is an excellent opportunity to spend the perfect Slovenia holidays.

Trekking in Nepal https://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/trekking-in-nepal/ Sat, 20 Aug 2022 12:36:56 +0000 http://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/trekking-in-nepal/ Continued]]> Nepal is a country well-known for its beauty and geographical diversity. Its hills and mountains cover 83% of the total land.

The highest mountain range in the world is found in Nepal, with the highest point above sea level being Mount Everest at 8848m. Remarkable trekking routes with magnificent scenery can be explored in the territory of the Himalayas.

Different paths have their own kind of beauty, and almost all who come trekking here appreciate the beautiful experiences. Nepal’s most recognizable trail is the Great Himalayan Trail which covers around 1700 kilometers across 16 districts of the country from east to west.

Many people, including Nepalese citizens and people from all over the world, travel on different routes every year. Since there are so many trekking options available in Nepal, the trekkers travel to the destination that most suits their holiday plans. Though trekking can be done in any season, autumn (Sept-Oct-Nov) and spring (March-April-May) are most preferred.

According to last year’s data, the most visited areas are around Kanchenjunga, Mustang, and Langtang National park compared to other trekking areas.

When trekkers choose their desired trail package, they need a help of an agent to move towards their destination. They can also choose everything from easy to challenging and suit the trekking to their needs.

In some places, trekkers need to get a permit before visiting. These and other required documents is what the agent is there to give to them.

Trekking can be done in different ways such as tea house trek, camping trek, and trekking along with guides. In the tea house trek, the trekkers are provided with not only the local foods and accommodations but also hot showers and clean rooms. This trekking is mostly available on the most popular trails – Annapurna base camp, Kanchenjunga trekking, and Manaslu trekking.

It can be even more carefree, if the trekking is done with the help of a guide as all the responsibilities of trekking, with the best comfort, including the food is provided by them. The agents will find an experienced and licensed guide who will make the trekkers feel at ease.

In a camping trek, different equipment is required such as tents, sleeping mats, food, and other needed gear. The camping is done in appropriate areas because it’s not allowed everywhere.

After a tremendous adventure everyone will get back to Kathmandu and will stay overnight there. Delightful farewell and the time for leaving Nepal has come.

If you want to know more about the possibilities for trekking in Nepal, visit Mount Adventure Holidays.

Top 17 attractions in Ljubljana https://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/top-attractions-in-ljubljana/ Tue, 13 Apr 2021 09:31:30 +0000 http://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/top-attractions-in-ljubljana/ Have you ever fallen madly in love with a place and felt at home there instantaneously? Good, then you’ve already been to Ljubljana.

If not, then feel free to turn that question into a premonition. Whether you’re in Ljubljana for a short city break, an extended holiday in Slovenia, or are looking for things to do in and around our stunning capital, this city simply possesses a special kind of magic, and the top attractions in Ljubljana are its Cupid’s arrow(s).

Ljubljana Center
Ljubljana Center

The first thing you notice as you explore the cobblestone streets in the greenest capital’s traffic-free center is the casual fusion of modern meets old. It’s been an important crossroads in this part of Europe since it was called Emona during the Roman occupation, and time has only made it prettier. The second thing you notice is…

1. Ljubljana Castle

A short hike or funicular ride up Castle Hill is the number one place to go in Ljubljana. The Ljubljana Castle has been overlooking the capital for centuries. It houses a museum with an overview of the building’s history, including a quick-and-dirty virtual castle recap, and often an interesting exhibition or two. The views from this popular wedding venue are spectacular.

From the castle’s tower you can get a superb 360⁰ panoramic display of Ljubljana and its surroundings. There’s even an escape room up there and a lovely restaurant, while festivals and an outdoor cinema are organized during the summer.

2. Ljubljanica River

Besides the obligatory stroll and people-watching from the cafes that line its banks, a boat tour down the Ljubljanica River is a great way to see Ljubljana from a different angle. You can spend some time around Špica (trans. The Point), a gathering point with a café, where you can learn more about the spirit of the river, admire the local wildlife (nutrias, swans, ducks, cranes, etc.) or just sit under the weeping willows at Plečnik’s terraced embankment and relax.

Legend has it, Jason and the Argonauts cruised down the Ljubljanica, and now you can do the same in a kayak or on a SUP board. Really unique ways of sightseeing, by the way.

SUP trip on Ljubljanica River

3. Prešeren Square

Slovenia’s most famous romantic poet was France Prešeren. We’ve even borrowed one of his poems to sing as our national anthem. It’s no wonder then that one of the top Ljubljana tourist attractions, the city’s main square, is named after him. Unveiled in 1905 and standing proud in Prešeren Square, the statue of the great poet faces a window of his unrequited love, Julia, and is basically Ljubljana’s version of Piccadilly Circus.

You can sit under the statue and observe life, admire the impressive ‘pink’ Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, or glance over to the river and the next thing to visit in Ljubljana…

4. Triple Bridge

The central bridge was built in 1842, with inscription dedicated to Archduke Franz Karl, while the other two smaller bridges were added by famous architect Jože Plečnik in 1932. Plečnik removed the metal railing from the main bridge and embellished the Triple Bridge with huge stone balustrades and peculiar-shaped lamps. Today, the Triple Bridge is still the main connecting bridge between the old and modern sides of Ljubljana. And speaking of bridges…

5. Dragon Bridge

The Ljubljanica River is crisscrossed with numerous road and foot bridges, but the most popular one is undeniably the Dragon Bridge. Built in 1901, this symbol of the city is a must-visit Ljubljana attraction. Tourists and locals alike love making selfies in front of the four sheet-copper statues that guard the bridge.

One legend says that Jason, the ancient Greek mythological hero, founded the city of Ljubljana by slaying a dragon. The second legend claims that the four dragons wag their tails every time a virgin passes by.

6. Central Market

Staying by the Ljubljanica River, another incredible design by Jože Plečnik that you simply must visit in Ljubljana is the Central Market. Built in 1939, the market consists of three parts: the covered area supported by pillars that houses butchers and sellers of traditional Slovenian products, such as cheese, pumpkin oil, bread, etc, the open market with tons of local produce, and the fish market on the riverbank. If you happen to be visiting from the US or Australia, make sure you check out the raw milk machine – it’s quite legal here in Slovenia.

7. Town Hall

Built in the 15th century, this lovely building is the seat of the Municipality of Ljubljana, and it’s doors are open to the public. Town Hall features four exhibition spaces: the Glass Atrium, the Historical Atrium, and the Central and Right Atriums. Interesting exhibitions are constantly on display. The façade reflects Venetian style architecture, while the vestibule has a late Gothic plaque with a coat of arms dating back to the 17th century.

In the Town Hall’s arched courtyard stands Francesco Robba’s Narcissus Fountain (Narcisov vodnjak) and another fountain, the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers, is in front of Hall. This place is also a traditional wedding venue.

8. The Old Town

Stroll and (window) shop in the Old Town. It’s definitely the place to go in Ljubljana. You can buy traditional products (honey & beekeeping, sea salt – Piran fleur de sal with an over 700-year tradition, Idrija lace, Rogaška crystal, artwork, etc.). Try some authentic potica pastry at Le Potica boutique. Visit the 3muhe shop to support a good cause and in case you get hungry, you are on a strip with some fantastic restaurants and cafes.

Whether down by the riverside or walking along the adjacent promenade, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to try something new. And the architecture is beyond picturesque!

9. Tivoli Park

Among Ljubljana’s top attractions is Tivoli Park. Its gorgeous green surfaces with tall, ancient trees, fountains, a rollerblade park, a sports hall and numerous hidden corners make for an excellent breather. You can have a drink at the Čolnarna café or in front of Tivoli castle, which is also the International Centre of Graphic Arts.

The main promenade leading up to this manor features an ever-changing photography exhibition. This spacious park is minutes’ walk past the Opera House and the National Gallery. Once there, you can also venture up Rožnik Hill with the 16th-century Church of the Visitation.

10. Ljubljana Zoo

Spread out under the Rožnik Hill is the lovely Ljubljana Zoo. You can take a bus there or go for a half-an-hour-walk. Yes, everything is close in Ljubljana. The Zoo’s location is phenomenal. There are hundreds of interesting animals to observe, a petting zoo, playgrounds for children, and a restaurant with refreshments in the middle of it all.

11. Plečnik House

Admire the life and work of the most famous Slovene architect, Jože Plečnik. He left a prominent mark on Ljubljana’s cityscape and those of other Slovenian towns as well as foreign capitals like Prague and Vienna. A permanent exhibition is housed with numerous sketches, plans, models and photographs of famous creations are on display, like the National and University Library, the Triple Bridge, Cobbler’s Bridge, the Ljubljana Central Market, and the Church of St Michael in the Marshes.

12. Metelkova

Ljubljana’s centre for alternative culture and the arts, Metelkova is a quirky place everyone can enjoy. There are fascinating graffiti and art to enjoy by day, as well as lots of happenings, especially in warmer months, and when night falls, Metelkova becomes the concert hub of our capital. For some musical entertainment, the places to go in Ljubljana are also the Opera House, Cankarjev dom, Križanke, Kino Šiška or Slovenian Philharmonic.

13. Museums and other cultural institutions

The largest museums in Ljubljana include the National Museum of Slovenia, the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, the City Museum, and other specialised museums (ethnographic, technical, natural science). The National Gallery is where you’ll find a huge collection of artworks by renowned local and foreign artists.

14. Ljubljana Cathedral of St Nicholas

Impressive on the outside as within, the Ljubljana Cathedral has beautiful baroque frescoes, organs, statues, and paintings. It’s recommended to visit the church when there are no religious services taking place.

15. Nebotičnik

When it was built back in 1933, Nebotičnik, the literal translation of which is “skyscraper”, was the tallest building in Central Europe. Take the elevator to its classy terrace and enjoy a fantastic view of Ljubljana. There’s also a nightclub up there with thematic events throughout the year.

16. Botanical Gardens

Located close to Špica, Ljubljana’s Botanical Gardens are nice for a stroll. They have an open traditional beehive where you can see how the bees go about their daily lives behind a plexiglass screen. There’s also a lovely café and a greenhouse with various tropical plants.

17. Šmarna gora

If you want a proper hike, Slovenians will tell you that Šmarna gora or Mount St. Mary is a piece of cake but if you are unused to walking up steep hills, then give it a try. Besides wonderful views of the whole Ljubljana Basin and the Alps, there is a great traditional restaurant there, where you can replace all the calories you’d lost on the way.

And remember, thanks to its central location, Ljubljana is a great starting point for exploring the rest of Slovenia.

Best time to visit Ljubljana https://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-ljubljana/ Tue, 06 Apr 2021 13:12:10 +0000 http://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-ljubljana/ Ljubljana is undeniably among the most uniquely charming cities you’ll ever visit. This small yet vibrant, laidback yet modern European capital has all the perks of a big city while being exceptionally easy to navigate and is an excellent starting point for exploring wider Slovenia.

Truth be told, like Slovenia itself, Ljubljana is a top destination to visit all-year-round. There are always plenty of exciting things to do and interesting sights to marvel at. It depends on individual preferences, of course, so it’s nice to know what to expect according to the time of year.

Although we highly recommend you visit Ljubljana in every season, we’ve nonetheless created a short overview of the city’s features throughout the year that will help you decide on when is your best time to visit Ljubljana.

Ljubljana’s Climate

Ljubljana is strategically situated in a specious basin on the doorsteps of the Alps and holds a near-perfect central position that acts as a crossroads to other major regions of Slovenia, which means it’s affected by the country’s four prevailing microclimates.

Meteorologically speaking, Ljubljana has an oceanic climate, bordering on a humid subtropical climate zone with continental characteristics, such as warm to hot summers and moderately cold winters.

Spring at Ljubljana Three Bridges

Temperature

Because of its aforementioned location, average temperatures in Ljubljana can vary drastically and are therefore quite difficult to predict. That said, compared to popular tourist destinations worldwide, Ljubljana is known for having very agreeable temperatures.

If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Ljubljana, then June, July and August are your safest bet. July and August are the warmest months with daily highs somewhere between 25 and 30 °C (77 and 86 °F) with temperatures rarely dropping below 62.4°F (16.9°C) at night. On the other hand, January is the coldest month with temperatures mostly lingering around 0 °C (32 °F).

Precipitation

Precipitation is relatively evenly distributed throughout the four seasons, yet surprisingly, winter and spring can even be somewhat drier than Ljubljana in summer and autumn. Yearly precipitation is about 1,400 mm (55 in), making Ljubljana one of the wettest European capitals. Thunderstorms are common from May to September and can occasionally be quite heavy.

Snow can be expected from December to February (or later), but snowfall has decreased substantially in recent years. Due to the large marshlands in its vicinity and persistent temperature inversion, Ljubljana is known for its fog (average 64 days of fog per year), mostly in autumn and winter.

Ljubljana in December

If you want to experience a winter fairy-tale in Ljubljana, then December is definitely the jolliest month of the year. Ljubljana’s wacky light decorations are true art installations you will never get tired of admiring. There’s a different theme every year and the streets and squares are transformed into gorgeous outdoor venues for various types of events.

Christmas markets are a big thing in Ljubljana in December. Temperatures are low but spirits are high. And so are prices. The winter high season means you should book your holidays in advance, as accommodations tend to fill up quickly.

Ljubljana in January

January is marked by fewer tourists, a greater chance of snow as well as cheaper accommodation and activities. You can go ice skating, skiing, sledding or attend ski events in the mountains. It also makes visiting other popular attractions, such as Postojna Cave or Lake Bled, both a short drive away, or to enjoy the less crowded landmarks and museums in the capital.

Ljubljana in February

February is even colder, but that doesn’t stop Ljubljana from being a hot destination. It may sound unlikely, but February is quite popular among foreign visitors. 8 February is National Day of Culture, and museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions are free-of-charge.

Slovenia’s pagan Halloween-style carnival called Pust takes place throughout the country, and Ljubljana is a great place for seeing a mardi gras procession in the center of town.

Ljubljana in March

March is when spring begins to awake in Ljubljana. The weather gets warmer, days longer, and the proper tourist season is still far enough for you to enjoy a less crowded Ljubljana. March isn’t that rainy, so sightseeing in Ljubljana and its surroundings is superb. People venture into the streets, the Open Kitchen food market is open for business, and the parks become more inviting.

Skiing is still on the menu, as are major ski events, like the Vitranc Cup at Kranjska Gora Ski Jumping World Cup Finals, both of which are a stone’s throw away from Ljubljana.

Ljubljana in April

Springtime is here! Easter celebrations and various other festivals in and around Ljubljana take center stage. The weather is warmer yet unpredictable. Wet spells are common, so you should always plan on packing enough of everything. Hiking, cycling, and water activities can be enjoyed without the crowds, and Ljubljana’s nearest ski resort Krvavec usually has excellent skiing conditions well into April. Coincidently, April is also the least humid month, and strolling around our capital becomes very inviting.

May in Ljubljana is a flagship month of great weather and balmy temperatures. The nearby mountainous regions become more accessible. In fact, the entire country opens up, and Ljubljana, Europe’s greenest capital, is in full bloom during this pre-peak period. The arboretum on Ljubljana’s outskirts is therefore a must, as are Ljubljana’s botanical gardens and numerous parks.

You can also venture on the 35-km circular path called “Walk along the Wire”, an annual event commemorating the occupation of Ljubljana in WW2. It’s probably the best way to feel Ljubljana’s small yet versatile character from different viewpoints.

Ljubljana in June

Summertime is knocking on Ljubljana’s door in June. The heat is on! Well, the temperatures are steadily climbing and the weather is sweet. June is already a time for booking your Ljubljana holidays and accommodations in advance. It’s advisable to make arrangements before the end of school (3rd week of June), because as the springboard city for exploring Slovenia, visitors to Ljubljana should consider discovering the country’s highlights before the summer season.

In terms of events, Ljubljana in June welcomes the Jazz Festival and the start of the Ljubljana Festival as well as other lively goings-on that you wouldn’t want to miss out on.

Ljubljana in July

The first scorching month is here. Although many locals migrate to the mountains or the Croatian coast, July in Ljubljana is still very busy. Expect the riverside to be jam-packed with tourists and something happening on every major street and square in Ljubljana. But when the hustle and bustle get too much, you can always retreat to Ljubljana’s amazing countryside. Yes, rural areas with lush forests and picturesque villages are a bike ride away.

Ljubljana in August

Another hot month in Ljubljana, August is also prone to quite a few random showers and summer storms. The mountains are calling this time of year, and many locals answer that call. But prices rise and accommodations become scarce as Ljubljana becomes a transit destination for waves of European tourists who stop off here on their way to the coast.

Staying in Ljubljana in August supplies you with a great deal of outdoor activities and opportunities to mingle in the lively cafes and open markets. Music festivals are another trend passed on from July, so be ready to get your groove on.

Ljubljana in September

The kids are back in school and the weather is still pleasant and stable in Ljubljana and the mountains without the sporadic summer storms. With the number of tourists dropping significantly, September is perfect for hiking and mountain climbing, cycling, etc., and sightseeing around Ljubljana becomes less hectic, and accommodation prices also begin their steady decline.

Ljubljana in October

The weather starts to cool and autumn enters Ljubljana in all its pretty colors. Due to favorably mild weather conditions, October in Ljubljana is also the busiest month. But do pack an umbrella, as October is the wettest month.

That said, visiting the city’s attractions is much easier without the summer crowds of tourists, which might make October the ultimate time to visit Ljubljana. Grape harvest begins and wine is served at numerous interesting events. The Ljubljana Marathon kicks off and the Festival of Slovenian Film is open for business.

Ljubljana in November

November is cold but quiet. It’s when Ljubljana is the least crowded and most affordable. St Martin’s day brings delicious wines to Ljubljana’s street stands and festivals are everywhere, including the Ljubljana Wine route, where locals and tourists mingle over a tasty glass of wine. All Saints Day lights up the cemeteries to create a peaceful spiritual atmosphere.

9 Best Cities to Visit in Slovenia https://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/best-cities-to-visit-in-slovenia/ Thu, 01 Apr 2021 10:53:13 +0000 http://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/best-cities-to-visit-in-slovenia/ Despite its modest size, Slovenia has an incredible amount to offer in terms of natural wonders and urban destinations. Indeed, just like its mountains, rolling hills, and scenic valleys, Slovenian towns and cities are immensely beautiful. They boast mesmerizing architecture, cute surroundings, and always come with plenty of things to do and see.

To make your choice of which cities to visit in Slovenia easier, we’ve selected the 9 very best among them.

1. Ljubljana

Ljubljana Castle over the city
Ljubljana Castle over the city

It’s not a giant metropolis, but that’s exactly what makes Slovenia’s charming capital so appealing. You can get a great feel for the place just by strolling, cycling or taking a boat ride down the Ljubljanica River through the center. Set in a picturesque location (like most Slovene cities), Ljubljana combines a laidback Balkan spirit with a modern Western vibe.

The riverside is lined with cafes and its historic squares are surrounded by restaurants for every taste. Its Old Town, dating back to medieval times, boasts a mixture of incredible architecture, as do other parts of the city with designs made by the famous architect Jože Plečnik, while a castle keeps a watchful eye from a hill above.

There’s always plenty going on in Ljubljana, like an open market where you can try different delicacies, a number of interesting events, museums and galleries to visit, escape rooms to escape from, outdoor activities to try, an alternative culture hub called Metelkova, where various art forms can be enjoyed, etc.

Accommodations are excellent and conveniently located, as is Ljubljana itself, which makes it easy to travel to anywhere in Slovenia via motorways and other regional road connections. In short, visiting Ljubljana is obligatory when holidaying in Slovenia.

2. Bled

Lake Bled castle

A quick hour’s drive from Ljubljana, up towards the mountains, is Slovenia’s iconic Lake Bled with the gorgeous town of the same name. Bled’s postcard views are accompanied by the alpine lake’s island with a gothic church that can be reached with the “pletna” boat, a 1000-year-old castle on a cliff, stunning villas, hotels, and spas with natural healing springs, all of which have a longstanding touristic tradition.

The town of Bled can be explored on foot, bike, or horse and carriage. Its top-notch restaurants serve excellent food, including the local kremšnita cake specialty.

Besides a lovely day-trip destination with next-door natural gems like the Vintgar Gorge, stunning hills and caving ops, Bled can be enjoyed on longer stays, as it’s located right on the edge of Slovenia’s Triglav National Park where a fantastic number of outdoor activities and scenic spots lie in store. When in Slovenia, one of the cities to visit should definitely be Bled.

3. Piran

Marina in Piran
Marina in Piran

Befitting the country’s size, the Slovenian Adriatic coast is not long, but it is exceptionally attractive and offers an array of pastimes. We could not talk about the Mediterranean part of Slovenia without recommending one of its highlights – the town of Piran.

Imagine a miniature version of Venice that you can explore in a single day. The architecture and cultural vibe are very similar, as Piran has deep historic ties to the Venetian Republic of old.

Piran is an excellent town to visit in Slovenia, because of its nice museums, scrumptious seafood, gelato desserts, incredible sea views (from the seafront or from a cliff above the town), and it goes without saying that swimming during warmer months is awesome.

The great thing about Piran is also that it’s located near other seaside towns, like Koper, Izola, and Portorož, so you can easily venture into the Karst region or hop over to Italy’s Trieste, or even catch a ride by boat to Piran’s famous counterpart – Venice.

4. Kranjska Gora

Scenic Lake Jasna
Scenic Lake Jasna

The Alpine resort of Kranjska Gora is the next top town to visit in Slovenia. It’s located in the very heart of the Julian Alps and offers a handsome assortment of both winter and summer activities. Hiking, mountain climbing, cycling, swimming (in Lake Jasna), skiing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and much more can be enjoyed in or around Kranjska Gora.

It’s truly a touristy destination everyone can enjoy and thousands do each year.

Brimming with hotels (some right on the ski slopes) and campsites, Kranjska Gora is perfect for a longer holiday or a short visit. Its close vicinity to Italy and Austria makes it suitable for taking trips to other super picturesque spots in the Alps.

That said, this town has such a fun atmosphere, you might not want to leave. The latter also includes cool sports events like international skiing and ski jumping competitions. If you’re looking for an active or leisurely break in the mountains, Kranjska Gora has you covered!

5. Maribor

Off to the other side of Slovenia now, northeast to be exact, where stands the capital of the Styria region – Maribor. The country’s second-largest city is another must among the best cities to visit in Slovenia. Even though many people mostly explore the west of the country, you should still include Maribor in your itinerary if you want more of an All-Around Slovenia Tour.

Maribor he second largest town in Slovenia

It’s quite different from Ljubljana, with local life centered mainly around a multitude of historic squares, bridges, churches, and other cultural highlights. In recent decades, Maribor has developed into a modern European city in every sense of the word.

The city of Maribor is surrounded by vineyards and even has the oldest vine in the world on display in Lent, the oldest part of Maribor by the mighty Drava River, which is (not so) coincidentally also the name of one of the biggest festivals in Slovenia.

Besides museums and various other sightseeing attractions, you can also visit the huge underground wine cellar, Vinag. In the winter months, Maribor is excellent for skiing enthusiasts, as it has an amazing ski resort in the Pohorje hills virtually on its doorstep.

6. Ptuj

Ptuj is officially the oldest town in Slovenia, with roots reaching far in history to Roman times. This colorful compact place is located on the Drava River and is a lovely day-trip destination. Ptuj has a gorgeous 12th-century castle on a hill that houses excellent exhibitions. Its riverside restaurants are very inviting, especially when the weather is nice. Whatever the forecast, the old town has the most fascinating wine cellar in its center called Kobal, where you can taste the best wines of the region and beyond.

For splendid cultural events, we highly recommend you also visit Muzikafe. It’s a famous cultural go-to spot, bang in the center of Ptuj.

Ptuj is also famous for hosting an annual folklore carnival in spring. It’s an old Slavic pagan rite of fertility, famous for the “kurenti” masks. Music, dancing, and general making of merry in the streets of Ptuj is an unforgettable experience that takes you deep into Slovenian tradition.

7. Kamnik

Located very close to Ljubljana (easy transfer by bus, train or car) and first mentioned in the 11th century, Kamnik was an important trading post and is one of the oldest and best towns to visit in Slovenia. From the Middle Ages onward, Kamnik had its own industry and a number of aristocratic families lived among its residents, as well as other prominent Slovenes.

Kamnik is in the foothills of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, which makes it a superb springboard for exploring this scenic area, including the famous shepherd’s plateau of Velika Planina.

With beautiful views, the quaint town of Kamnik is home to impressive castle ruins shrouded in legends. Kamnik has that old-time feel with a modern twist and has seen a major development in terms of urban planning in recent years. Its streets are often transformed into scenes of wonderful cultural events and the surrounding natural environment is splendid for hikes or cycling holidays.

Steeped in history and local goings-on, Kamnik is a very unique town most worth exploring!

8. Kobarid

The next best town to visit in Slovenia is Kobarid. Not only because it’s the historic crossroads located in the ridiculously scenic Soča Valley and close to the Kozjak Waterfall, Kobarid is also home to award-winning restaurants, like Ana Roš’s Hiša Franko & poor man’s Hiša Polonka.

Famous for the 1917 Battle of Caporetto, documented by Ernest Hemingway in his novel A Farewell to Arms, this town place has been inhabited since prehistoric times and archaeological remains of 5th-century Roman buildings have also been discovered.

Kobarid’s unique location also offers a wide selection of recreational activities, such as rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, mountain biking, paragliding, and hiking. Moreover, the town’s main tourist attraction is the WWI Museum, which presents the heritage of the Isonzo Front, with demonstrations of life during the Great War.

Know that if you visit Kobarid, you are in for a proper alpine treat that combines culture, rich food, excellent accommodations, and an enviable list of activities and day trips around some of Slovenia’s most breathtaking regions.

9. Bovec

Welcome to the adrenaline capital of Slovenia! Bovec is situated in an awe-inspiring basin on the upper Soča River, under Mount Kanin in the Julian Alps, close to the border with Italy. and the beyond scenic Trenta Valley.

Bovec panorama

This exciting sports hub is popular for kayaking, rafting, canyoning, hiking, paddle boarding, ziplining, paragliding, and rock climbing, and has a wide network of cycling trails. Neighboring Mt. Kanin has the highest ski slopes in Slovenia (above 2000 m), providing visitors with exceptional runs during the winter season.

Bovec’s history, rich history dates back to Roman time, and during WWI, the area was the scene of bloody battles of the Isonzo Front, fought between Austro-Hungarian forces and the Italian Army, while in WWII, Bovec was occupied by the Nazis and was strategically very important.

Besides sporty and cultural highlights, Bovec also promises great gastronomic delights, superb accommodations with picture-perfect views, and doubles as a great basecamp for exploring the Slovenian Alps.

There plenty of great cities to visit in Slovenia

So ends our (shortened) list of the best cities to visit in Slovenia, but it should be noted, dear reader, this subalpine pearl of a country has hundreds of fascinating towns and villages that are most worth exploring.

The good news is there is no correct order, simply a matter of preference and time. Now go discover!

Fishing Holidays in Slovenia https://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/fishing-holidays-in-slovenia/ Fri, 19 Mar 2021 10:25:37 +0000 http://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/fishing-holidays-in-slovenia/ In recent years, Slovenia has certainly become a European mecca for fishing enthusiasts from all over the world. Offering so many different fishing adventures in such a small area is a huge advantage, and adding some incredible sightseeing to your fishing holidays truly presents you with a fantastic destination you simply have to visit!

Fishing in Soča River

Fly fishing holidays

Fly fishing tourism is certainly the most important part of the freshwater fishing industry. More than 20.000 tourists from all over the world come to fish in Slovenia’s rivers. The majority of anglers want to try our most recognizable rivers, Soča with its crystal clear water and the nearby Idrijca, which swirls along the beautiful green forests of the Slovenian Alps.

But the main reason for visiting those two rivers is in fact an indigenous species of trout that resides in them, the Marble trout. It can only be found in Slovenia and some bordering rivers in Italy, making it the most desirable fish in Slovenian waters.

Fly Fishing in Idrijca

Besides fishing, in your spare time, you should also try other fun activities promised by Slovenia’s magnificent Alpine region, such as hiking, rafting, or cycling.

Carp fishing holidays

When you mention Slovenia to any foreign carp angler, they will instantly think of Lake Bled. This magical piece of water is home to some of the biggest carp in Europe, if not the whole world. Carp fishermen from everywhere visit Slovenia at least once in their fishing career and they get so overwhelmed with this Alpine pearl that they always end up returning.

Fish weighing over 30 kg are caught in Lake Bled on a daily basis, and with the church and the lake as backdrops, photos become precious memories to put on the wall in your trophy room.
Fishing holidays in Bled are a perfect way to spend your vacation in Slovenia.

The majestic Carp

Sea fishing holidays

In the summer months, when visiting the seaside towns of Koper, Portorož, or any other coastal town, you are presented with the lovely Adriatic Sea, known for its large biodiversity and dense population of fish of different shapes and sizes. Spending one pleasant afternoon or evening on the boat fishing for saltwater residents and seeing the coast from a different perspective certainly sounds like a great plan for a family adventure.

Fishing for Huchen

This fish is called the King of the River, and its wild reputation attracts scores of anglers who want to conquer its underwater kingdom. In the winter months, from October to February, you can try your luck by catching one of these prehistoric river monsters and ensure that your name will be written in the Slovenian fishing books alongside a few others who succeeded in catching a Huchen. This fish is most common in rivers near Ljubljana, such as the Sava and Ljubljanica.

When visiting Slovenia in winter, you have an opportunity to go skiing, hiking, or cross country skiing.

Is Slovenia safe? https://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/is-slovenia-safe/ Sun, 28 Feb 2021 15:38:00 +0000 http://slovenia-holidays.com/blog/is-slovenia-safe/ Short answer: Yes, Slovenia is super safe.

Longish answer: Safety and the feeling of security, in general, is one of the foremost aspects of traveling, wouldn’t you agree?

To put your mind at ease, this post will disclose the main reasons why your Slovenia Holidays are the safest.

Slovenia ranks 5th among the safest countries on Earth

Slovenia has been gravitating towards the top of the “safest countries in the world list” for decades. Today, the Global Peace Index places Slovenia very high indeed; at number 5 in 2021 to be exact. This includes nasty things like all types of crime and terrorism rate.

The report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which included 163 countries, defines safe as: “according to national and international conflicts, level of harmony or disagreement in the country and indicators related to militarization”. Slovenia is doing amazingly well. And it’s no wonder: We strive to build a compassionate and welcoming society at every level.

Slovenia is one of the safest countries in the world.

Slovenia makes you feel safe wherever you go

As a small, very accessible country, traveling around Slovenia is easy and extremely safe. Whether you are visiting on your own, as a family, or in an organized group of fellow tourists, you can rest assured that the most dangerous thing is the likelihood of wanting to return to Slovenia every year.

Slovenia’s largest cities (Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Koper, etc.) are small compared to urban hubs of other European countries. Strolling around, day or night, is deemed safe. There is a negligible amount of petty crime like pickpocketing, and any type of mishaps regarding tourists are virtually non-existent.

Slovenia is also a pleasant destination for women solo travelers, people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identification, etc.

Slovenia travel warnings and restrictions

Slovenia has been marked as a destination to which citizens from any country can travel. The ongoing COVID situation has of course limited non-essential travel, so we advise all foreign travelers to Slovenia to check with their country’s embassy first before visiting our lovely land.

A note on immigration issues by the Slovenian Government:

“Migration is a way of life in the modern world. Like other Member States of the European Union, Slovenia supports the integration of foreigners holding a residence permit. Slovenia adheres to the principles and values of equality, freedom and mutual cooperation. As the personal circumstances of immigrants are different, we devote special attention and care to each individual. We encourage and facilitate their inclusion in cultural, economic and social life.”

Slovenia is LGBTQ+ friendly and gender equality is on the rise

Although the struggle for adequate LGBTQ rights is far from over, as is sadly still the case around the world, Slovenia has strict anti-discrimination laws regarding any type of violence and prejudice against the LGBTQ community. Same-sex partnerships have the same rights of marriage, (for now) excluding joint adoption and vitro fertilization.

Slovenia is also very committed to tackling its remaining gender equality issues. Women in the workplace and society at large have been awarded greater protection and representation of their rights, which is why Slovenia has the 3rd lowest gender pay gap in the EU. Equalizing power relations between women and men is taken very seriously in both governmental and societal activities.

Travelling with children in Ljubljana
Safety of you and your family is not a problem in Slovenia

Freedom of religion in Slovenia

The laws governing this part of Slovenian life guarantee the freedom of religious expression and draw a clear distinction between state and church. Religious discrimination and hatred are illegal. Religious groups are free to practice (most) of their spiritual rituals in Slovenia.

Common sense is the number one deterrent

Although Slovenia is an exceptionally safe tourist destination, it goes without saying that a dose of good old-fashioned common sense will definitely add to your level of security. Basically, the universal rules of social conduct that apply to any place you visit are advisable for Slovenia as well.

Things like keeping your travel documents, money, credit cards, phones, and other valuables on your person or at a secure location. As mentioned, bigger towns like our capital Ljubljana are safe to stroll around in, but that doesn’t mean that you should push your luck by venturing into areas too far from the center. Streetwise behavior like not attracting attention to yourself or causing unnecessary mayhem will always get you through safely.

Traveling with us means that you’re in safe hands

Besides Slovenia being such a safe tourist destination, when booking your holiday, trip or taking part in any type of activity, your safety is always our top priority.

Whether it’s climbing Mt Triglav, paragliding over Lake Bled, or canyoning down a narrow gorge – our expert guides make sure you return from your adventure safe and sound.
