Discovering Ljubljana by stand-up paddling through its vibrant centre will give you a one-of-a-kind perspective of the city’s landmarks, including the Ljubljana Castle, the Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge as well the many other wonderful architectural designs along the colourful banks of the green Ljubljanica River. After our first taste of SUP paddling and a lunch break, we’ll mount our bikes and explore the rest of Ljubljana, stopping off in the great Tivoli Park for some slacklining. Then it’s up to Ljubljana Castle for some views and back in time for dinner and night time merry-making.
Next stop is the spellbinding Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s biggest natural lake. Embellished by majestic Alpine backdrops, this gem of a lake is bang in the middle of Triglav National Park. We’ll stand-up paddle along the most striking part of the lakes’ shore and practice our paddling techniques. After our SUP session, it’s time for a healthy snack to recharge our batteries and get ready for an hour-long hike through the forest up to the 60-metre Savica Waterfall and its smaller cousin a bit further on. Then it’s a quick drive to Bled, our new home for a couple of nights.
Waking up next to Slovenia’s most iconic lake, it’s breakfast time and then off to do some SUP yoga, before paddling on the lake and getting inspired by the incredible surrounding and the medieval cliff-perched castle. SUP games are in order, as is a refreshing dip in the lake and a visit to the legendary Bled Island where we’ll ring the wishing bell for luck. The afternoon it’s time to explore Bled, its lovely castle, and admire the phenomenal panorama it offers. After lunch, the splendid Vintgar Gorge awaits, before retiring for well-deserved rest.
Early in the morning, we head off toward the Upper Soča Valley, one the most scenic parts of Slovenia and stop off at the pretty Most na Soči village. We’ll SUP under an impressive bridge, then follow the railway along the narrow valley of the Idrijca River. Our next destination is the sunlit Mediterranean coastal part of Slovenia. Goriška Brda, is known for its endless vineyards, olives and fragrant orchids. We’ll spend the night at a traditional homestead, take a walk among the vineyards and visit a local wine cellar. Tasty culinary treats with high-class wines will end the day nicely.
The last day is dedicated to supping along high cliffs towards the cutest Slovenian seaside town of Piran. We’ll explore the quaint Venetian-style streets, have a lovely lunch and then SUP back.
The afternoon can be spent relaxing at the beach or you can opt for a trip up to Postojna Cave, one of the insanely beautiful symbols of Slovenia’s natural world.
