Located south of the Karawanks, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps boast incredibly varied landscapes, intermittent plateaus, the most famous being Velika Planina, and stunningly scenic valleys of glacial or river origin. A wide network of marked mountain trails leads hikers and mountaineers to mountain huts, river springs, and various natural and cultural landmarks, all surrounded by breath-taking panorama. The area is also famous for mountain biking, road cycling and water sports. In wintertime, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps attract thousands for some cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in its vast and unspoilt wilderness.
