Kobarid

A historic town in the Soča Valley with amazing natural and WWI heritage made world-famous by Hemingway.
Inquiry

Not only does the settlement of Kobarid boast the highest number of top-class restaurants in Slovenia, it’s also the historic crossroads of important routes in the Soča Valley. Kobarid is most famous for the 1917 Battle of Caporetto, where the Italian retreat was even documented by Ernest Hemingway in his novel A Farewell to Arms. The place has been inhabited since prehistoric times and archaeological remains from the Hallstatt period have been found in the area and remains of 5th-century Roman buildings have also been discovered. Kobarid’s unique location attracts thousands of visitors each year, as its natural heritage offers a wide selection of recreational activities, such as rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, mountain biking, paragliding and hiking. Kobarid’s main attraction is undoubtedly its WWI Museum. The Kobarid Museum presents the important heritage of the Isonzo Front on a local, European and global scale. Unique demonstrations of fights and life during the Great War are housed there, which include rich photo materials and tell the fascinating yet sad story of the horrific battles at the Soča River, such as the 12th battle of the Isonzo Front, the Miracle of Kobarid. This incredible museum has been visited by numerous important guests and dignitaries: three presidents of the European parliament, state leaders from all over the world, monarchs and Noble Prize winners.
