Goriška Brda wine region

The most famous wine region in Slovenia with some of the best wines in the world and spectacular vineyard views.
Inquiry

Goriška Brda is steeped in winemaking tradition dating back to pre-Roman times, when the area was inhabited by the Venets. Numerous amphoras found in the area testify to the importance of the area as the centre of viticulture. It’s no wonder ancient cultures found this place so convenient. The climate in Goriška Brda is particularly favourable for growing vineyards. The Adriatic is only around fifteen miles away, separated from the area by the Soča Plateau. Higher hills in the north and a limestone ridge in the east protect the Brda region against bad weather from the north, making it a perfect winegrowing location. Goriška Brda’s landscape consists mostly of sedimentary flysch rock with alternating layers of sandstone, marl, and carbonate turbidite. The mixture of Mediterranean and continental climates provides this terraced vineyard region, also called Slovenian Tuscany, with enviable wine-growing conditions. The most prominent wine variety produced in Goriška Brda is undoubtedly Rebula. Although originally from Greece, Rebula has been produced in this place for over 750 years and still represents around 25% of the region’s wine. There are also plenty of other wines to taste in this fantastic region, including Merlot, Chardonnay Sauvignon Verde, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Mavasia, Muscatel and Barbera. Visiting the vineyards and wine cellars of Goriška Brda is always a wonderful experience. The locals supply excellent prosciutto and tales of Slovenia’s winegrowing culture that leave a long-lasting impression on everyone who comes for a sip.
